/ LAND RESIDENCE WEST SEATTLE, 2001-2003 This 1930 Tudor was given a complete makeover. The architect-owners performed design work as well as general contracting and most of the construction. Work involved creating a more charming and efficient kitchen at the main level, enlarging the master bath, and reorganizing the master suite to create an office and extra closet space at the upper level. The design strove to use salvaged materials and sustainable products that balanced quality with budget. At the main level, the kitchen was gutted and fitted with custom wood cabinets, new appliances and a tile backsplash. Sustainably harvested Madrona wood floors were installed, black granite countertops were salvaged from a school chemistry lab, and the sink was salvaged from another kitchen. Upstairs, the existing half bath was updated and expanded to a full bath with a custom tile shower. Throughout the design and construction process, META Architects endeavored to honor the original character of the house, while modernizing it with good design and budget. |
